I recently did a poll on Insta posting a picture of the word CERAMIDES I wanted to know how many people knew what this was. I got the results back and thought I need to tell you exactly what Ceramides are and that you need to check all your skincare products right now!
Ceramides are lipids (oils) found naturally in skin and are essential in supporting the skin barrier and retaining moisture. Without ceramides, skin can become dry, itchy, or irritated. Being a scientist in profession doesn't necessarily mean I love chemistry but - there are some formulas which I can appreciate. Check out this gorgeous one right here :)
So in a nutshell Ceramides waterproof your skin, keep the moisture in, keep irritants out and can also repair the skins barrier.
The most effective way to fight wrinkles is to maintain proper skin hydration. As the years go by, we have to be more vigilant because as we age, these systems begin to fail, and our skin loses flexibility. Its structure becomes weaker, and then wrinkles become visible. Here is a schematic which shows quite simply exactly what Ceramides do (skin cells are the bricks and ceramides are mortar holding it all together/ in place):
Unfortunately, as time passes and we age, the amount of Ceramides decreases. It also decreases due to stress, environmental pollution, cigarette smoke or UV radiation. Reduction in the amount of ceramides in the skin causes the malfunction of the lipid barrier, and thus - the loss of water. And the consequence of this is dehydration, wrinkles, drier, rougher skin, irritation and redness. This is where skincare knowledge comes into play—because it really is possible to significantly restore what’s been diminished. The greater the loss of ceramides, the thinner and less elastic the skin becomes (true story).
Ceramides fall under the category of “skin-replenishing” (aka skin-identical) ingredients. Because they’re naturally a part of your skin, ceramides are ideal for all skin types—even the most sensitive, breakout-prone, or oily skin. They’re also safe to use around the eyes, as long as the product is fragrance- and irritant-free.
Anti-aging prevention should not be delayed - don't wait another day. Ceramides are a natural and well-absorbed ingredient that does not cause side effects. That is why it is worth using them daily before your body stops producing them. However, if you missed this chance and you are over 35 - nothing is lost. You can still start using them today as they will improve the tone, firmness and hydration of your skin.
If interested you can find the Golden Ceramides Range over here.
Wishing you a lovely week.
